Developing a Thesis Magazine Skin

by Stefan on 13 January 2010

thesis-skin

As I mentioned yesterday I will present a new design for omTVserier this month and since it is a news site I thought it was a good idea to use a magazine orientated theme. Unfortunately there only seems to be a few good looking themes like this and since I have been using Arthemia for a long time now I decided to create a new one built on Thesis.

The thing is that even though I spent hours trying to find inspiration from existing themes I was not able to find one single good looking magazine site built on Thesis. Therefore I have decided to share my skin when it is done. It will probably not be free since I have spent several paydays working on it, but I promise it will not cost much.

What do you want in a magazine styled theme?

To make this skin even better I thought I would ask for your opinion. What do you want in a theme built for magazines and news sites? Support for any particularly plugin, featured content, YouTube-integration, etc?

What I have this far

  • 2 sidebars ready for unlimited widgets
  • One footer ready for 4 widgets
  • Built in search in the header
  • Dropdown-menu

Please think hard and ask your friends if possible. I am certain a lot of people will appreciate this so lets make it as great as possible.

exactly! been looking at every mag theme and getting seriously desperate as im not a developer and need one but cant bare to buy an ugly theme.
Arthemia is one of three good ones but still not that good (ie a bit old)
I would say top 2:
side by side posts/ posts by category
related articles plugin

basically to make a good real mag front page and make content accessible…

My 2 cents but would def buy a good one built on thesis
cheers

Its good to see you talking about making progress in the 100th post of your blog. Good. And Developing a Magazine theme from thesis is not really being observed by a lot of people. Your blog will get unique look.

add social icons in the layout which reduces unnecessary plugin load and also add the twitter, feed icons in the sidebar just as they look like in ur side..

Here are things I’d like to see:
Teasers selected by category, instead of most recent posts in any category.

Integrated featured content slider.

I agree on the related articles but that can be obtained via a plug-in.

Stephan, I just bought Thesis also and have also been extremely disappointed in the lack of news magazine offerings.

For me personally, I’m trying to come up with something similar to “Time”. http://www.time.com/time/

I see this post was from January. Can you give an update on your progress?

Thanks.

You can see the result over at http://www.omTVserier.se but I had to make changes in the core so I will probably not release it.
