Google Changes Nofollow

by Stefan on June 28, 2009

By now it’s old news, but I would like to share my thoughts about Googles change on nofollow. A couple of weeks ago Matt announced that Google had changed their algorithm on nofollow several months ago and he was surprised that no one noticed.

For some years many of us have used nofollow on irrelevant links to give our special links some extra bonus, but the question is, will this change?

Almost all blogs makes it possible to add a link to your own site when you comment a blog post. Since Google changed their algorithm, every nofollow-link will now lower the value on all other links, a change which may result in blogs losing value. The question is, what will we do about it?

At the moment I can think of four possible scenarios.

Possible scenarios

  • Change from nofollow to dofollow, so no linkjuice gets wasted.
  • Remove the possibility to add your own website.
  • Move comments to a new page.
  • Ignore it and hope that nothing will change.

Since it happened so long ago I’m guessing that not much will change.

I’m not sure I understand why you would want to stop people from leaving a link on your blog?

Well, it is not as much stopping people from leaving a link as it is reducing the number of outgoing links. Earlier you could tell where to send the link power but since Google decided to change its point of view on nofollow the only method now is to reduce the number of links.
