How to Get Visitors From Flickr

by Stefan on 27 July 2009

All external links on Flickr are nofollow, but even though it’s impossible to get backlinks from Flickr it’s possible to get a lot of visitors instead. There’s at least three different methods you can use to get visitors from Flickr.

Get visitors from Flickr by using search engines

You are probably well aware of Flickr often ranks good at search engines such as Google and Yahoo. You can use this by uploading coveted images for your niche with interesting headlines.

If you have a niche site about Ferrari, upload images for different models and then name them “Ferrari F430 Spider”, etc. By doing so your images will rank high when someone search for “Ferrari F440 Spider” and since you’ve added your URL under the image several of your visitors will visit your site.

Find contacts

Find people with similar interest. Search for groups with similar interest as your niche site. If you have a niche site about Ferrari, find all groups about Ferrari and then find people there. Add some of them as your contacts.

At the same time you can sign up for specific groups and then add your images. By doing so plenty more people will visit your account.

Comment

This is probably the easiest but most time consuming method to get visitors from Flickr. Find images within your niche and comment them. It’s a lot like blog commenting but you can make shorter comments without having to spend time reading a whole post.

What to think about

  • Add your URL to every image description
  • Add as many tags as you can think of
  • Add your images to as many groups as possible
  • Write headlines that people search for
  • Sex sells!

I don’t use websites for pictures, but I do use Facebook and I watermark the url of my website.

Watermarking is another Great way to drive traffic for long, since many people are fond of copying images and saving them on their desktop. In long term you can expect lots of direct traffic with it.

I’ve not been very good at this but I will try to find some software tomorrow that will do it automatically for me. I’m not personally fond of watermarks but as you say, people have a tendency to save images and also put them on their own blog.

Good information. I actually have a Flickr plugin added into my homepage already, but am not using it yet, as I do not have enough pictures of interest to make it live, but will one day soon.

Those are definitely some good tips to generate more traffic… which I really like!

Thank you. I found a plugin for Windows Live Writer that now will upload all of my images automatically to Flickr instead of my blog.

Very Cool… Windows Live Writer is another thing I keep wanting to try out, but just haven’t found the time yet.

I understand your point of Flickr images and why Flickr would rank well, but now that I think about it, I can’t seem to remember when the last time I ended up at flickr – or saw flickr – in a search result.

Or maybe you mean mostly as an “image search”, your flickr picture will show up?

Exactly, most of the visitors for your Flickr account will come from “image search” since there are few sources optimizing for specific keywords there.

I have never tried Flickr, but I think I am going to give it a try. I didn’t know you could basically attach your URL to a picture and then get visitors. Very interesting way to get traffic.

Thanks for the Tip!

I recommend you to try it. Flickr is actually a highly undervalued resource for both money and traffic. Next week I will publish a post about how to make money on your Flickr-account.

You’re welcome Atul. Just remember to also add friends and if possible add short comments on others photos. The best thing about Flickr is that you don’t have to write as long comments as when you are commenting on a blog. Since it’s a photo you will always also have something to say about it.
