This is without question one of the most popular link building strategies being promoted by bloggers. It’s usually free, you don’t have to think while submitting to directories and it’s easy to build backlinks.
Quite a number of people decided to take this to another level a few years ago by creating small link directories on every site they published. By doing so every site they created got several links the minute it was created.
Since more and more link directories were created Google decided to get rid of them and gave almost all of them low rank. There’s still a few high PR link directories left but it’s widely discussed if they really give you any advantage.

Find free link directories
By searching for “free link directory” on Google you’ll find thousands of directories where you can add your site. If it feels like to much effort, you can visit Vilesilencer where they list and rank over one hundred directories.
Link directories are a waste of time
Even though you’ll easily receive hundreds of links through this method I recommend you to avoid it. It takes a lot of time and my experience shows that link directories gives you just a small or none amount of link power.
Instead I recommend you to read my other methods for link building.

Your saying that these links don’t add any value…… could you expand further on this..
This method do add value, but it’s in such low amount that you most certainly can get better value by spending your time on other methods. If you have a good method to apply for a lot of link directories this may be a good thing, but if you have to do it all manually, I think you should spend your time on other methods.
Well, I think Google accepts only linking to or from related blogs with fresh and quality content. Link directories do not improve better SERP and PR.
I agree that it is not the best way to spend your time. I will say that there are several dozen high pr blog directories that I think it does make sense to submit to. I always look for high pr and human edited blog directories.
