How to Create a Page Without Sidebars in Thesis

by Stefan on August 20, 2009

Yesterday I got a question from Christie on Misc Bytes on how to create a simple page without sidebars. Since I was working on my page for WordPress Hosting my first thought was to show you how to create a custom page in Thesis, but after some thinking I realised that there’s a much better method.

When creating a new page or editing a existing one, scroll down and look at your right hand sidebar and you’ll find this option:

no-sidebars-thesis

Choose No Sidebars and publish the page. Refresh it and you will now have a page without sidebars in Thesis. Don’t forget to read more posts from me on how to customize thesis into a unique theme.

Thank you so much! A few months ago I spent time trying to create a new page template that had no sidebars then decided to drop it for lack of time. I didn’t see that setting in WordPress at all. Now I hope to create an A-store on a niche site this weekend!

Well done Stefan, that was very helpful. It’s always nice to help others out. My inbox has started to flood with queries and questions about how I did this and that. I have no problem helping people and you seem to be the same.

Good to see you respond so fast to queries. Would you have any recommendations on how to work with unstable niche?

Sure Chris, but it requires a bit more thinking from my part, meaning more time. I will save your question and come back with a good post about it.

Very Simple and basic tip but many Thesis users are not aware of it,… I always make my about and advertisement pages as no sidebar page.. This make content more visible..

Interesting idea Harsh. I’ve also been thinking about doing it but never did because I want to get maximal exposure for the link in my sidebars. I ended up with using it on my page about WordPress hosting.

Stefan,
I must be missing something: I don’t see that template menu for eliminating the sidebar on my Thesis Edit Post page. My problem is different from the person who wanted to eliminate the sidebar from a post. My sidebar is only being displayed on the homepage and not on any of the post pages. Can you explain to me how to change my settings so that all of the post pages have my sidebar displayed? Thanks for your assistance.

This only works for pages, not posts and this is why you can’t see this option. With that said I can’t be able to figure out why your sidebar doesn’t show up. Do you have any plugins activated that may inflict with your sidebar? Try deactivate them to see if that solves your problem. Do you use OpenHook and have code in any field that affect your sidebar? It may be in the end of your content box or in the beginning of your sidebar. Feel free to contact me through my contact form instead because I will have a lot easier to help you there.

You were right about it being a plug-in. When I deactivated my PRINTFRIENDLY plug-in, the sidebar became visible in all of my posts. I hadn’t noticed that the PRINTFRIENDLY button was only appearing on my main post–in it’s truncated version that people need to click CONTINUE to read all of the post. Otherwise, the button wasn’t appearing at all, even when the plug-in was activated, on the complete post(s). I’ll need to find another PRINT plug-in among the many available to see if I can get one that works with my blog template. To answer your question completely, I have not used OpenHook, but I did insert an image (transparent color) in the sidebar to have the sidebar descend all the way to bottom of page. Could that be affecting the sidebar? Thanks for your help.

Thanks, worked perfectly! I was starting to look around trying to do a custom template, but no need as this was exactly what I was looking for.
