In graphical user interfaces, a tab is a navigational widget for switching between sets of documents. Having tabs allows an application to have multiple documents in a single window. They are commonly used in web browsers, text editors and preference windows. – Wikipedia
If I understand this patent correctly Adobe Systems Incorporated was approved for a “Method of displaying multiple sets of information in the same area of a computer screen” back in 1996. Later on we came in contact with it in software as Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, Notepad++ and basically every software where you can use multiple documents at once.
Today we all know it as tabs and none of us could live without it. My question is – how come Spotify do not use this 13 years after it was patented?
I have a tendency to constantly search for new artists, and to save my favourites I use playlists named as “artists” and “albums”. Occasionally I find a great compilation album with several different artists and just like when I go through my RSS-reader I prefer to open up every artist and listen to what they offer. Unfortunately this is not possible in Spotify and instead I have to visit every artist individually and then probably forget about them when I move on to the next artist on the album.
A similar problem occurs when you are searching for a specific song and come in contact with another great artist. In this case you got to write the name down for the future or simply forget about what you were doing and focus on this new artist and all of his songs.
Dear Spotify, why oh why?
